Do You Need Microneedling?

Microneedling – A new way to produce collagen

First off, what is it?

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to heal itself and create new collagen and elastin. Results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks.

Who is a candidate?

One great thing about the SkinPen is that it can be used on all skin types and can be used to address many problems such as acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Not only can it be used on the face, but it can be used on the neck, arms, decollete, hands, legs, abdomen, and back.

What does it feel like?

Due to the high speed motor in the pen, the treatment feels more like sandpaper rubbing the skin instead of needles. Numbing gel is applied to the skin prior to treatment for a more comfortable experience.

What is the downtime?

The total healing time depends on the severity of the damaged skin and the depth of the SkinPen treatment. Most patients have some slight redness (like a mild sunburn) for 2-4 days, some patients may heal in 24 hours or less. Patients can resume makeup use 24 hours after their SkinPen treatment.

When will patients see results?

Many patients notice healthier skin immediately. However, the natural repair process of your skin continues to progress over the course of 4 weeks. Keep in mind dermal collagen remodeling takes place over time so it is not realistic to expect damage that has occurred over an extensive period of time to disappear immediately. You may not see the final result for 3-6 months following your final microneedling session.

How many treatments are recommended?

The number of microneedling treatments required will be determined by your skincare professional based upon your individual goals and the health of your skin. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo aging, stretch marks, or acne scars it is recommended 6-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals.

Is there anyone who should not use SkinPen?

SkinPen microneedling is contraindicated for patients with: A history of keloid scars, scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases; a hemorrhagic disorder or hemostatic dysfunction; or an active bacterial or fungal infection. SkinPen is not recommended for pregnant women because the micro-needles produce micro injuries on the skin which causes a natural repair process to begin. This healing process and new production of collagen requires vitamins and nutrients to be utilized that would otherwise be reserved for the unborn child.

What is the best product line to use following SkinPen treatments?

The best product line to use post-microneedling is Skinfuse. This product line is formulated specifically for skin that has been treated with SkinPen. The use of these products significantly increases your results by omitting the common skincare ingredients known to increase inflammation or hinder the remodeling process.
